parachute band

okay here’s a very bad blurry picture of Parachute Band’s pastor handing over the mike to my church’s senior pastor. and in the background is the band itself. yes. bad photo-taking. but there was good worship because we have a Fantastic God. so there :)

after church, went to meet my nursing clique, who have very bad ways of trying to disguise the fact that they want to celebrate my birthday in advance. but the intention was very sweet lahs i love them all! =D

we watched DOA cos it was the only movie at bedok cinema that was at 3pm-ish. i kept laughing at all the wrong moments. but guys will surely love this movie. we just found it so-so.

went to K-Box after that! sang for 4 hours and stuffed ourselves with food for 3. yes. buffet style. couldn’t resist the food.

)

wondering why the group pictures look so awkward? i used timer and had to run like crazy to get back with the rest to pose :)

hmm

Saturday, October 14th, 2006

i just joined a cell group after being MIA from the cg scene for 3 years-ish. there were plenty of reasons why i chose to go back now, but i must say the main reason was the fact that i’m now in not one but TWO church ministries(yay superlife and 1st aid!).

anyways, my cell is made up of people all older than me. which effectively makes me the youngest there. but i’m pretty alright with it. cell group is not all about age you know. and besides, whenever jokes are made about being old, i won’t be targetted! haha.

we discussed quite a number of things and one good point brought up was how during cell we should be able to speak freely without being ‘politically correct’ or ’spiritually correct’ all the time.  which is something everyone should think about!

there have been times when you talk to someone and because you don’t know the person all too well or the person is not the same religion/gender as you, you’re particularly concerned about whether your speech is PC or SC.

but in a cg, we’re all a big big family in God so we should be comfortable enough to share without inhibitions(but within reasonable limits lah)!

for example things that we’ve experienced in life that God has blessed us richly in are definitely share-worthy without having to care if the event was a particularly risque one in the first place or that we don’t have any bible-references from the lesson God gave us. why? cos God’s already involved, He’s all the answers you need combined in one great Being :)

i definitely have a good feeling about cell group.

and its all thanks to God.

on the way to ECP

not been sleeping well these few days. and today i happily went to east coast park at 8.30am(woke up at 7am) to 'exercise'! haha. i walked all the way to macdonalds with my friend.

shadows.

and that's definitely considered as some exercise. saw a bicycle in the drain and laughed.

bike in drain

ah well. another strange thing happened today. i accidentally made eye contact with this fella(trust me its not on purpose cos usually i stare blankly ahead during the mornings. i ain't a morning person) who seemed to be looking towards my direction and his expression was one of recognition which of course puzzled me cos i didn't recognise him.

dang, i hate it whenever this kinda things happen. and yes, i am slow. so i may or may not have known that fella. but one word of advice to people who might want to attempt the same feat in the future - DON'T :) just maybe say my name a tad louder so i can actually respond(and if i dont at least you didn't shout eh ;) or if you forget my name, say 'Talented Person Who Is Really Fantastic'(its a 'joke' i use to torment my friends all the time).

wrote a long article on Singapore Idol 2 after i learnt that Mathilda the Powerhouse actually got booted out instead of Joakim Gomez. and yes, i don't watch SI2 anymore. its kinda painful for me, the nationalist, to actually witness something that has the potential to embarass my beloved country on an international scale.

removing my braces on september 9! congratulate me!

imported all my previous blogger posts here. maybe i’ll regret it later and delete them all but for now, they’re staying.

anyway i’m loving my stay at lah.cc! its so user-friendly and not to mention the template looks waaay more savvy than i’ll ever be able to source from the ever-reliable blogskins site. the best part is that i’m moderating my comments so even if a thousand and one people decide to flame me i can just happily delete them one by one. hurray for me :)

been doing alot of thinking recently. more often than usual.

for those of you who don’t know me, my lower secondary school life was miserable. i was bullied and sabotaged to an embarassing extent because of one sentence i uttered on the first day of school without thinking.

but i won’t exactly delve into detail here ahaha.

so today is an ex-classmate’s birthday party. and i’m not sure if i would be going. i told another ex-classmate i wasn’t sure about the whole thing and was greeted with “lilien you’re being over-paranoid lah.”

why is it that one who has not been at the receiving end of bullying is unable to empathize and even mistake trepidation for paranoia?

today was a good shopping trip. managed to buy a huge set of headphones headphones

and 2 christian-themed tees.

unity tee

heaven tee

will have to cease the shopping for a very long time, may i add.

anyway, paid a visit to ICON @ bugis. heard of it before but never really committed it to memory until ros said she wanted to buy a new tee. so it was off to Little Lamb’s store and it was located at ICON. didn’t have to think much to find the building cos the moment we walked out of the main building, i saw breadtalk and we jaywalked across(shhh!).

anyway that building has 6 storeys. amazing huh. best part is that it is fully air-conditioned! my kind of place! cos i tend to pespire rather easily. lol. saw an ex-schoolmate(SBM) who stared at us rather viciously for some strange reason. funny, considering the fact i’ve never spoken to said person before(or known on a personal basis). hmm.

was talking to a friend online and she was moping about the loss of her ex-boyfriend(she allowed me to write about it here provided i don’t include her identity). he dumped her around this time of the year for her best friend. tough luck, eh? i know diehard romantics will be all aghast and wonder why a guy could be so heartless as to pull of such a stunt nearing V-day but lets all be pragmatic okay? and every year, around this time, she gets kinda down in the dumps. and i always tell her the same thing. its not worth it to be this upset over a guy. cos if you are ever looking to place hope on a fellow human being, you’ll be crushed.

alas, she is unable to find it in her heart to actually listen to me and i don’t blame her the slightest bit. its easiest to dole out advice as the third party(onlooker) but when it comes to receiving harsh yet perfectly true criticism, even when cushioned by a concerned friend, it never is easy and it never will be.

i myself am guilty of not being able to listen to well-meaning advice.

but i also don’t like it when people criticize not for the sake of encouraging you, but rather to bring you down. doesn’t that make you feel lousy?

however, is there a standard way of advising people without making them feel bad about themselves?

there are 10 guidelines(not in order)
1) Pray before talking

2) Think really carefully(are any of my words too strong? is it straightforward?)
3) Try to recall how your friend reacts to similar advice(like did he/she react strongly)
4) Correct body language (actions like cross-armed means stubborness)
5) Speak in a gentle tone (softer please)
6) Do it in private and not embarass the person(how would you like it?)
7) Choose a nice happy time to tell(receptiveness goes up in happiness)
8) Phrase it in a way you yourself might like to hear it

9) Assure the person that you’re not bent on judgement, that you merely want to help

10) Stay calm in all circumstances, even if friend recoils in shock and disgust.

i dont claim all these to be MY suggestions, most of them i’ve heard from sermons(most recently one by DSP Joe Ong and his wife Debbie). and yeah, i find them to be pretty useful. not that i’m really cautious and stick to those guidelines religiously, but they do come in handy when the situation gets sticky eh.

Merry Christmas

Sunday, December 25th, 2005

I took that picture. It’s the tallest man-made Christmas tree in Singapore and it’s about 72(metres/feet, i’m not sure). went to tampines to have ‘Christmas Dinner’ with ros and also to catch john in action for real(cos the last week i couldn’t make it).

saw Khoo S C (the malaysian born-singaporean adventurer) in pure mineral water with his scuba gear and all! it was coool. haha. when i saw him he already clocked 174 hours or so.

left at about 10pm. thank goodness the crowds died down by then.

“the whole point is that there’s a chance you might die” - Koh Li-Na on Khoo Swee Chiow’s attempt

Anyway, here’s wishing everybody a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!

(I pre-dated this entry because i won’t be blogging on Christmas itself)

Brief Update

Sunday, December 11th, 2005

took the 2nd pic en route to meeting up with dearest ‘Ashley’. she, being the generous person she is, shared with me her voucher for free buffet at the hotel she’s working at!

dinner was fantabulous. except that both of us got a little nauseated by consuming ’sunshine’, a banana milkshake drink(not sure what else was inside) so we practically wasted 1/3 of our meal. but not to worry, i compensated by eating extra after i recovered. poor aiz didn’t recover until she got home. but thanks ash!!!

*happy EARLY birthday to meeeeeee*

Sunday, November 6th, 2005

It was great! Thanks to each and everyone of you who showed up. You know who you are (and some of you don’t read my blog lol)

Set up a flickr account but the specific bday photos are in this set.

Some pictures here
Listen to ME
Aizhen fooling around with the camera. and i was telling her not to. haha.

Don't let me TONG you

Cake Cutting Ceremony LOL
me cutting the cake that the riverlife gang so nicely bought for me!

Presents!
1 - Wallet and Card from gillian + leon
2 - Card from shuhua
3 - Tee and Badges from jas, baohui, sharon, serene and shilin(i think)
4 - Towel from ‘my daughter’ shuhli
5 - Purpose Driven Life book from eleta + kelvin
6 - Necklace from huimin+ poon ( i think so)
7 - Giordano Voucher from aiz!
8 - Darlene Zschech’s ‘Change Your World’ CD from jeremiah + lydia(i think so!)
9 - Earrings from deborah

was very touched by those who showed up and awkwardly mingled because i insisted on inviting ALL KINDS of friends. so i had primary school , nyp-sbm, nyp-shs, riverlife, tks friends all there. haha. was kinda messy but they managed to chill out together(sort of!) mainly because i think once you’re my friend you’re kinda used to crazy things happening. lol.

rushed around picking up people and directing them to the bbqpit. good thing only poon was disappointed that there was a pool coz i didn’t fancy being thrown into the pool yah. haha. almost got tricked once though!

the food was finished up by 9pm, which was fantastic, because i thought it was alot of food for just about 20 people.

didn’t bother to properly ask for a cake but was very touched and surprised when the cake arrived! haha. deb tricked me by pretending to tell me ’secrets’ which i half believed to only hear the strains of ‘happy birthday’ being sung at the end of the ’secret session’. haha. was so stunned that i didn’t know what to think and i nearly cried but self control kept it at tearing haha. Thanks to lydia, jere, aiz and deborah who bought the cake! :) I love chocolate cake haha. and you guys too.

managed to clean up pretty fast coz everybody pitched in.

feeling VERY tired now but happy that the day turned out so well. special thanks to Ros and Aiz who came early(esp ros!) to help me with the prep for food :D

have a bday lunch with ros on the real date itself and a stopover at huimin’s chalet! can’t wait can’t wait..haha… :)

Tour AngMoKio

No Sleeping Within The Library
When you’re at the library to return books, you pretty much have nothing better to do besides taking pictures that you think are really hilarious. Hahaha.

Satay Man and Assistant’s Ass!
Their satay IS good. Its one of the malay stalls @ east coast park hawker centre.

Snow.Wolf.Lake CD
This CD, my friends, is autographed by none other than Jacky Cheung, star of Snow.Wolf.Lake and a really famous cantopop singer in HongKong. I won it thru 8 days, the magazine i buy every week without fail. I Love 8 Days.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Vegetable Pasta
I paid $6.90(including drink) to eat pasta and grass.

Today, PW and HM kindly accompanied me to go look for the 8days office so that i could go collect my cd that i won thru sending in an email related to SWL musical. anyways since the address was stated as 10 Ang Mo Kio St65, we thought that we should walk to AngMoKio central and take a bus from there, coz our school was already at ‘yio chu kang’ and at the end of the AMK area. 8 days was part of mediacorp publishings, and they were in a building called Techpoint, with no indication of where exactly in AMK it was situated except the 10 AMK st 65.

HM called her friend for help whom kindly informed us that we could take both bus 70 and 268. so okay, we ended up taking 268 coz we only found out we could take 70 from school when we were halfway to AMK. we had to cross over at AMK MRT coz it was to be taken from the other side. the walk alone took us 20 min. the bus wait was about 15 min.

anyway, the bus journey was really long because townlink buses are scheduled to tour the whole neighbourhood. got very impatient because the bus driver informed us that we would get off last. after 15 min in the bus, i looked out.

‘That building looks familiar’
I thought to myself
‘Oh great…it’s that Grassroots club!’
Sudden horrendous realisation dawned upon the slow-t0-react me.
‘That’s NYP!!!!’

well apparently 268 and 70 go past the sports hall exit of NYP and we could have easily walked thru NYP, gone out thru the back and taken a 10 min walk to Techpoint, which was situated in the AMK industrial park(which also houses Apple and some plastics factory)

but getting my Cd was soooo worth it…despite the amount of UNECESSARY walking we did. yup :)

Things I Have Done Within 4 Weeks of Attachment

Friday, September 9th, 2005

1) Created a new show to rival Disney On Ice –> I call my version “Aunty/Ahma on Ice”. Instead of cutesy little cartoon characters skating gracefully on ice, we will have elderly female patients going about in their wheelchairs and spraying body powder everywhere.

2) Smiled whilst standing around people who were getting scolded.

3) Forced kaili, zhangzhuan and huda to attend my ‘yan chang hui’. Plus a few other patients too. There wasn’t any singing. Mainly para-para dance movements.

4) Suggested to a patient who complained of itchiness at her wound to ask a doctor to help her scratch to alleviate the itch.

5) Didn’t remember anatomy terms correctly and recalled duodenum as ‘duoderm gel’.

6) Encouraged a talkative patient to talk even more by agreeing with everything she said and adding on more topics for her to talk about.

7) Actually understanding half of what a kindly old malay lady was telling me about her constipation. In Malay.

8) Held hands with an elderly lady to escort her to the toilet. Mainly because she refused to let go of my hand. Thank goodness she’s an old lady or else i think i would have had my blood supply to my hand all cut off.

9) Said the words “Bu Yao Suo Men Hor” at least 2 times a day

10) Have had at least 6 patients fart near my hand during diaper changing. Next time, be careful of my hand. I may be fart-shaking your hand.

Perfect Catch

Thursday, September 8th, 2005

went to watch a(nother) movie! this time i went to watch it with huda. she forgot her jacket and i wore a skirt instead of pants.

a tip for people who get cold easily in movie theatres : Bring a jacket and wear long pants please. preferably with covered shoes too.

Perfect Catch was a rather cute movie. funny, sensitive and romantic. it was about Lindsey(drew barrymore), a career woman and Ben(jimmy fallon), a schoolteacher who happens to be obsessed in a somewhat unhealthy way with the Boston Red Sox.

certain parts were really lame like how the anaesthesiologist tried to shave a certain part of Ben’s anatomy as part of ‘Clean Ben Up’. but overall, the movie is pleasant to watch and the original storyline from nick hornby’s book isn’t messed up too much.

PS : i managed to spell anaesthesiologist correctly!!! wow!!! like how amazing is that??!!

back at work

Monday, August 15th, 2005

today there was this old man whom i thought could only speak in hokkien coz he kept talking in it and didn’t seem to respond to chinese. so i didn’t bother asking my schoolmate for help. i could understand mostly what he was saying anyways. den i discovered that the old man could speak in cantonese!!! i was sooo irritated can!

and there was another old man who came in at 1540. he looked like the kind who spoke only dialect and malay(he’s chinese), so i asked huda to talk to him in malay. in the end, he kept gesturing to me and saying “hua yu! hua yu! wo hui jiang hua yu!” errrr. so when the doctor asked us to take his weight, huda and i had to help him up coz he was complaining of light headedness due to dizzy spells and shortness of breath. so okay, huda and i did sucha good job of holding him up until the weighing machine read 10kg. so we thought it was konked out.

me : eh i think the machine spoil leh
huda : step on it to test it !
(i step on it to realise its working fine)
doctor : both of you are carrying the man lah!!!

the man was apparently a regular ‘visitor’ in the hospital.

doctor : aiyah! you shi ni ah!(oh man! its you again!)
man : shi ah, hen xi huan zhe jian yi yuan(yes, i like this hospital!)
doctor : yi ding shi zhe li de fengshui hen hao suo yi jing chang yao lai zhu!(must be because the hospital’s fengshui is very good, must come stay here often!)
